Maldives: Resort or Guesthouse? How to Choose
2 min read

The Maldives has a reputation for expensive luxury, but there is more than one way to visit. Your choice of island changes the budget, the pace and the experience.
Private-island resorts
Resorts occupy their own islands and usually offer water villas, spa treatments, dining and activities on site. They are ideal for honeymooners and anyone who wants everything in one place.
Local-island guesthouses
Guesthouses on inhabited islands cost less and give you a taste of local life, with beach areas set aside for visitors. Rules on dress and alcohol are different from resort islands, so read the guidelines before you go.
Transfers matter
Resorts are reached by speedboat or seaplane depending on distance, and transfer costs can be significant. Ask what is included, and check flight timings to avoid an extra night in Malé.
- The drier season is generally November to April.
- Book snorkelling and dive trips early in peak months.
- Compare total cost, not just the nightly rate. Rules, entry requirements, weather and prices change, so confirm the latest details with official sources before you book.
