Travel Insurance: What to Check Before You Buy
2 min read

Travel insurance is one of those things you hope not to use but are glad to have. A short read of the policy before you buy can prevent unpleasant surprises.
What a good policy usually covers
Look for medical expenses and emergency evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, delayed or lost baggage, and delays to flights. Some countries require insurance for entry, so check your destination's rules.
Read the exclusions
Adventure activities such as trekking at altitude, scuba diving or skiing are often excluded unless you add them. Pre-existing conditions may also need to be declared.
- Check the coverage limits and deductibles, not just the premium.
- Save the insurer's emergency number offline.
- Keep receipts and reports for any claim.
- Buy soon after booking so cancellation cover starts early.
Ask for help if unsure
If the policy wording is confusing, ask the insurer or your travel advisor to explain it. We can point you to what to look for when planning your trip.
