Altitude Sickness: A Practical Guide for Himalayan Trips
2 min read

Trips to places like Ladakh, Spiti and high parts of Sikkim take you to altitudes where the body needs time to adjust. This is general information, not medical advice.
What it feels like
Mild symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness and trouble sleeping. They usually appear within hours of arriving at a higher altitude. If symptoms are severe or worsen, descend and seek medical help.
How to lower the risk
Ascend gradually and allow a rest day at the first high stop. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy alcohol and take it easy on arrival.
- Talk to your doctor before the trip, especially if you have heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions.
- Do not push on if you feel unwell; the mountains will still be there.
- Choose itineraries with proper acclimatisation days built in.
Know your plan
Know where the nearest medical facility is, carry a basic first-aid kit and share your route with your tour operator.
