Sikkim and Northeast India: Permits, Routes and Best Months
2 min read

Sikkim and the northeastern states reward curious travelers with quiet valleys, distinct cultures and big landscapes. A little paperwork and patience on the road go a long way.
Permits and entry rules
Some areas, including parts of Sikkim and several northeastern states, need permits or registrations for visitors. Rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change, so check current requirements or ask your travel advisor.
A good starting route
Many travelers fly into Bagdogra or Guwahati, then travel by road. Gangtok, Pelling and the high lakes make a good loop in Sikkim, while Meghalaya and Assam offer living root bridges, tea gardens and Kaziranga's wildlife.
When to go
Spring and autumn are generally clear and pleasant. Monsoon months bring heavy rain and landslides in many hill areas, so plan carefully.
- Allow more driving time than maps suggest.
- Carry cash, as ATMs can be sparse in remote spots.
- Hire local drivers who know the roads.
