Planning a Kerala Houseboat Stay in the Backwaters
2 min read

Drifting through palm-lined canals on a houseboat is one of the most relaxing ways to see Kerala. A little planning goes a long way toward making it feel special rather than rushed.
Day cruise or overnight stay
A day cruise covers a lunch and a few hours on the water and suits a tight schedule. An overnight stay lets you watch the sunset, eat on board and wake up to a quiet morning, which is the version most travelers remember.
Choosing where to start
Alleppey (Alappuzha) has the largest selection of boats, while Kumarakom and Kollam are generally calmer. Ask how long you will actually spend cruising, because rules on operating hours and boat routes can vary.
- Ask what is included: meals, drinking water, air-conditioning hours and a crew.
- Look at recent reviews and the boat's registration before paying a deposit.
- Bring insect repellent and a light layer for evenings on the water.
When to go
The cooler, drier months from roughly October to February are the most popular. The monsoon is lush and quiet and can be very good value, but heavy rain may affect cruising. Combine the backwaters with hill stations like Munnar or the beaches of Varkala for a well-rounded trip.
