Khajuraho for First-Timers: Temples, Timing and What to Skip
2 min read

Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is famous for its medieval temples and the fine sculpture that covers them. It is a small town, which makes it easy to see well in a short stay, provided you plan around the light and the heat.
How many days do you need?
Most travelers are happy with one full day and a relaxed morning either side. The Western Group of temples is the main attraction and rewards a slow walk with a guide who can explain the carvings and the stories behind them.
If you also want to visit the Eastern and Southern groups, nearby villages or a wildlife outing, add a second day. Khajuraho works well as one stop on a wider Madhya Pradesh trip.
Best time of day to visit
Go early. The stone looks warmest in morning light, the crowds are thinner and the temperature is far kinder in summer. Late afternoon is a good second window, and an evening light-and-sound show is a pleasant way to end the day.
- Carry water, a hat and comfortable shoes you can slip off at temple entrances.
- Hire a licensed guide at the gate or arrange one through your tour operator.
- Keep the hottest hours (roughly noon to 3 pm) for a café break or rest.
Best season and getting there
The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the most comfortable for walking around the sites. Dance performances are often held around the temples in late winter, so check dates if that interests you.
Khajuraho has its own small airport and rail connections, and many travelers combine it with Orchha, Panna or Varanasi. Our team is based here, so we can help you shape the route. Rules, entry requirements, weather and prices change, so confirm the latest details with official sources before you book.
